Agrius Restaurant

Agrius restaurant is an offshoot of the very popular Fol Epi bakery in Vic West. We did not have reservations but they keep the patio and bar area free for dropins. While we waited for a table to be free in the patio we sat at the bar for drinks. I tried a vermouth called Punt e Mes which was bitter but alright. My wife had the cider made from apples and quince which was dry and tasty.

When the table was free we shared some appetizers which included lamb tartar, tuna tartar, tomatoes and pesto salad, and oysters. They were all delicious. They also had the delicious Fol Epi bread available for snacking and sopping up the juices and sauces.

For a main I had the crab and shrimp pasta, which was creamy and delicious. My wife had the salmon and Parisian gnocchi. For dessert I had the frozen cream and crisped meringue with fruit compote. It was all very delicious and we will definitely be coming back here again!

Postcard of the Interwebs - 14 September 2016

Radiation Dose Chart: An XKCD infographic on how much of a dose you get for various activities compared to one another.

New and More Eco Way to Smelt Metals: MIT has developed, by accident, a way to smelt metals using electricity rather than heat.

Ultrasound used to Wake Person from Coma: Cool idea to be used in certain circumstances.

Timeline of Earth's Temperature: Another well done comic by XKCD.

90 Companies responsible for Climate Change: List of companies responsible (along with the consumers that support them) for the above temperature change. Along with cows. They make a lot of methane.

Real Shelf Life of Foods: Is this can of food still safe. Head here to find out.

USA Hate Group Map: Interactive map of a lot of hate groups in the USA. Probably not all of them. Sad.

Hornby 2016 - Day 4 - Final Notes

We left our campsite at 11am expecting to get the noonish ferry, as we had when we were last here seven years ago. Not only did we not but we had to wait for four ferries before we could get on. Fortunately they sped up the schedule. I did pick up, at Beltane books, a collection of all the Dore etchings for Dante's Trilogy for $2!

Many who live on Hornby all year long have mentioned, when asked, that the island is getting too popular and that things are changing away from life in the 70's. We noticed it a little too, especially with house prices. Those who traveled there for decades during summers are now retired and sitting on the islands committees because they have the time and the retirement income.

On a note, if you liked all the cool things to do and pictures of Hornby, be aware that many of the facilities close down after Labor day. Accommodation is cheaper but ferry service is more sparse and there are less shops to go to.

Hornby 2016 - Day 3 - Last Pictures of Heron Rocks

Our last evening at the campsite. A deer popped by for us.

You can just see the top of our tent on the far shore.

We fried up a Delmonico steak with some mushrooms, local garlic with some red wine. Also grilled zucchini and orange peppers. Sorry no pictures. We did enjoy the meal as with our other meals, in the below chairs by the shore.

Hornby 2016 - Day 2 - Heron Rocks Seaside Part 3 of 3

We ate supper while enjoying watching the sun go down and play with colors on the rocks.

Hornby 2016 - Day 2 - Excursion

So day 2 at Hornby started as every great excursion should, after the previously posted pictures of our morning walk...with oatmeal!
Not just any oatmeal but oatmeal with apples and grilled banana with maple syrup!

We then went to the Saturday farmer's market and picked up some garlic (for planting and eating) and a shirt for me. We then went to get some lunch at the Ringside market area of the island. They had this lovely mural painted by an artist we have a silkscreen print from, Graham Herbert.

We then had lunch at Vorizo Cafe and I ordered the pulled pork Mexican platter. Delicious!

The garden center across the road was wonderfully random.

We then visited a few pottery and artists residences to see what they had. Then we went to Helliwell park to walk around before picking up our Hornby Island Bakery pizza!
That's me walking away and doing my best Bill Bixby impersonation.

Hornby 2016 - Day 2 - Hornby's Heron Rocks Landside

The landside at Heron Rocks is just as nice.

More pics of the seaside at Heron Rocks.

Hornby 2016 - Day 2 - Heron Rocks Seaside Part 1 of 3

Heron Rocks on Hornby has many wonderful sights to behold. As a co-operative campground, its also private and not busy. Enjoy!

More to follow.

Hornby 2016 - Day 1 - Victoria to Hornby

Over labor day weekend we both took an extra day off to make it a four day weekend and head to Hornby Island. We left a little later than we wanted but still made it to Coombs to have lunch at Cuckoo's, a fantastic Italian restaurant.
I had the Italian antipasto platter, which was delicious!
My wife had the West coast crab cakes and minestrone soup. She really liked the crab cakes!

We then drove to Buckley Bay, took the ferry to Denman Island, then scooted over to take the ferry to Hornby. Once on the other side we drove almost 360 degrees around the island (there is a mountain and park to prevent a direct route) to get to the Heron Rocks camping co-operative. Its been around for about 50 years and there is a 30 year wait to be a member. As non-members we put our request after the members do. Here is our camp site after being set up.
Once set up, we had our Heron Rocks regular first supper: Kraft Dinner with extra cheese, sausages (have substituted hotdogs before), and a sparkling beverage (Normandy cider this time). Yum!

Villiage Taverna

The Village Taverna is in Cook street village. It was opened by one of the son's of the owner of Eugene's (closed last year after 30 years). We went here for lunch and each tried the lamb platter for one. It was cooked and prepared excellently: lamb was succulent, squid was soft, and the humus was just garlicky enough. I tried a sip of the Greek wine my wife ordered and it brought back memories of when we were in Greece. We would go back here again.

Bao on Fisguard

Bao on Fisguard is in the old original location of Noodle Box. My wife and I were doing errands downtown when we passed by and decided to get some takout.
The buns were nice and fluffy. The fillings were varied and I took advantage of the three for $12 choice. They were tasty and filling for a lunch. We would eat here again.
