The Thyssen, or Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, is another premiere art and sculpture museum in Madrid. It forms the third leg of the golden triangle of art, including the Prado and Reina Sophia. The museum was established in 1999 and prior to that was the second largest private collection of art, after the British Royal family. Much of the art is now owned by the Spanish Government with some on loan from Baroness Cervera Thyssen-Bornemisza. What follows, and in the next two posts, are our favorite objects of art.
The Crucifixion by Vitale de Bologna
The Virgin of Humility by Fra Angelico
Saint Sebastian by Gianlorenzo Bernini
Saint Jerome in Penance by Jose de Ribera
The Piazza San Marco in Venice by Canaletto
The Annunciation Diptych by Jan van Eyck
Portrait of Henry VIII of England by Hans Holbein el Joven
The Annunciation by El Greco
Santa Catalina de Alejandria by Caravaggio
The Grand Canal from San Vio Venice by Canaletto
Self Portrait wearing a Hat and Two Chains by Rembrandt
