Tavira Streets

Here are some shots in the streets of Tavira.

Tavira Castle

There has been evidence of a castle of one form or another, in the spot of Tavira Castle, since the time of the Phoenicians. Its current version is the one renovated after it was taken over from the Moors to protect the area from pirates. It was heavily damaged during the 1755 earthquake.
There is an inner garden beyond the entrance.
You can walk along the walls and look on the garden below.
There are two towers left and one of them has commanding views of the town.

Tavira - Shoreline

Here are some pictures of the shoreline of the river in Tavira.

Tavira - Lagoas Alojamento Local - Hostel

The Lagoas Hostel was a perfectly fine place to hang our heads for a night. They are in the Northern side of the river that separates the city and close to sights and eateries.

Here are the rooftop relaxation area and a view of the town.

Salema Streets

Here are some of the sights around the streets of Salema.

Lourencot - Supper

We made reservations last night to eat at Lourencot resteraunt and we were glad we did. For an appetizer we had the octopus salad, which had great flavour and is a local delecacy as it is caught by the fishermen in town. We chose from the catch of the day red breem, which the owner caught during the day as his mother does the cooking, and with it the house vino verde. Delicious. I capped it off with strawberry tarte.

Salema Flowers and Plants

During our walk near Salema we saw many interesting flowers and plants.

Salema Western Coastal Walk

We decided to spend the morning hiking out on the Salema Western trails we read about. The new developments have eliminated the original directions on the website but we muddled our way and saw some very nice sights.

Salema Sunrise

We both woke up early so we thought we would head down to the beach of Salema and see the sunrise. Here are some pictures.

Salema - A Mare B&B

A charming place just a 1 min walk from the old part of town is a nice B&B called A Mare. The breakfasts are amazing and have a lot of variety. Even fresh orange juice!

Lourencot Restaurant - Lunch

We decided to have lunch at Lourencot restaurant and boy were we glad. I had the grilled mackerel special and my wife had the golden breem. Both were healthy portions and the local cat took care of our extra fish.

Saleme - Mirimar Restaurant

Mirimar restaurant was recommended by the owner of the A Mare B&B we were staying at. It is one of a few places by the water and was opened up by a German fellow decades ago. I had the sardine pate on bread to start. We both had the traditional cataplana or fish stew, which had multiple kinds of shellfish and fish in its delicious broth. It was very satisfying.

Salema - First Night

In the Western side of the Algarve is a small fishing town of Salema. It has been developed quite a bit in recent years as the rest of the Southern coast real estate fills up. In the old town part, it still has a lot of charm.
