York - Morning Walkabout - Museum Gardens

Our first stop on our early morning walkabout was the Museum Gardens.
St Mary's Abbey was established in 1055 but was dissolved under Henry VIII in 1539.
The 10 acres of ruined abbey land of the Yorkshire Museum was granted the Yorkshire Philosophic Society in 1828 and this building was built two years later. It houses biological, geology, archeology, and astronomy items. More later.
The 14th century Hospitium is now available to rent for special occasions.
There is a storytelling wooded area that is quite cute.
The multiangular tower base dates from the original Roman fortress tower of Eboracum. The fortress itself held 6000 soldiers and covered 50 soccer/football pitches. The 9th legion set up these walls before disappearing from history. The stone coffins were found in a relatively recent dig in York.
The outside is impressive. Later rulers built on top of the existing structure.
A excellent example of different eras and the sediment that accumulates with time.
St Leonard's Hospital was built around 1300 CE but dissolved in 1540.
It could care for as many as 230 patients.
