There has been evidence of a castle of one form or another, in the spot of Tavira Castle, since the time of the Phoenicians. Its current version is the one renovated after it was taken over from the Moors to protect the area from pirates. It was heavily damaged during the 1755 earthquake.
There is an inner garden beyond the entrance.
You can walk along the walls and look on the garden below.
There are two towers left and one of them has commanding views of the town.
