The Nuyumbalees Cultural Center, at Cape Mudge, provides a look into the culture and history of the We Wai Kai Nation. There were many cultural items inside. The focus is on the traditional objects used in the Potlatch events that were held by coastal nations that were outlawed in the late 1800's, taken by Canadian government officials, and sold to collectors and museums. There were no picture taking allowed inside. We spent two hours inside looking at the displays of returned or hidden potlatch objects and the stories around them. It was informative and thoughtful.
On the shore by the cultural center is a story telling or relaxation area.
In front of the museum they have many casts of petroglyph rocks from this area that are 2.5k to 3.5k years old. They are best seen in early morning or late in the day when the light picks up the symbols better.
Well worth a visit.
