Idanha-a-Velha - 1 of 3

Started as a Roman settlement, called either Egitania or Igaeditania, Idanha-a-Velha retains many Roman, Visigoth and Medieval buildings.
The walls along the North are very thick as they were expanded during the last years of the Roman empire.
These buildings were the result of a rich count in the 20th century who wanted to make an estate based on the 17th century style of buildings. Although the exteriors look done, the interiors were never finished and were walked away from in the 1950's.

There is a large amount of Roman stones for graves, declaratations or other notable events from the local area collected here for viewing. The remains of the paint makes the past come alive.
