Monsanto the Castle

Castle Monsanto was built by the Knights Templar, after taking it back from the Moors, it was transferred to the Knights of Santiago and later back to Portugal. In the 19th century it was abandoned after a gunpowder explosion. There are theories that there was a prehistoric fortification here, later reinforced by the Romans, no trace of it has been found.
Even up here the boulders are used for defence or just left here.
A grand rocky platform on the outside of the castle.

An arch is a grand thing.
A view of the castle from the other side. Challenging hiking trails!
