Belem - Jeronimos Monastary - Inside and Out

Jeronimos Monastery was established by the order of Saint Jerome in 1601 after it had started building one hundred years earlier. It was built on the site of a church run by the militant-order, the Order of Christ. It was paid for by a five percent tax on goods from the Orient. The monks that ran the monastery, were the Hieronymite monks, who prayed for the King's soul and that of the navigators and sailors. They did this till 1833. The structure is a perfect example of Manueline architecture.
