Biroswald Roman Fort or Banna

Birdoswald Roman Fort, of Banna, is the only Roman fort in which extensive post-Roman occupation has been proven. It is still being excavated today.
When we were there the renown museum was closed due to expansion of the buildings they reside in.
These are the museum and administration buildings and the start of the excavated fort. The buildings were fortified to repel border reivers (bands of family robber clans).
The site is in very good shape.
The fort shows signs of being inhabited 100 years after the Romans left. These two granaries had long halls built on top of them after that. There has been different settlements built on the East and West sides of the fort of different time periods.

There is much to excavate here still and will continue to surprise repeat visitors, like in Vindolanda.
