Citadel Hill - New Large Museum

(Delayed posting. Visited during summer 2024)

The various museum spaces inside Citadel Hill National Historic Site have always been interesting and I learn something new each time. The old museum, which had displays of the fort through the years, has now been replaced and made into a huge area for the most robust presentation of the Halifax area through time as well as the Citadel. I've been to a lot of museums and this one impressed me.

The rooms are large and have different themes or time periods that they focus on.

They also have interactive video and tabletop displays that give different viewpoints of the early and colonial history of the Maritimes and Halifax area. Mi'kmaq, French, Acadian, and British positions and goals are presented to give each person the scope of these interactions for a robust education.

This new museum starts at the beginning with the Mi'kmaq and proceeds through time, ending with WW1, WW2, and today. Here are some more images of inside this museum.

The different Mi'kmaq communities in the local area.

The start of Halifax including the small forts and palisade walls.

Early British fortifications in the area.

The British Grenadier Soldier in the 1700's.

One of the interactive tables going through the time of major conflict between the Mi'kmaq, French, and Acadian versus the British from 1749 to 1751 from the French point of view.

At the end of the museum there is a video that takes you through the years.

I very much liked this new museum and hope that visitors learn about history in the Maritimes.
