(Delayed posting. Visited during summer 2024)
When driving by Windsor I always wanted to stop here but haven't since my youth. Home of North America's oldest blockhouse, Fort Edward National Historic Site is a great place to stretch your legs and explore some history.
Built in 1750, it was an important place before that to the Mi'Kmaq and later the Acadians who settled here. The British built this blockhouse to extend control and support soldiers from their centre of power in Halifax. In 1755 it was the point where local Acadians were rounded up and expelled from the Maritimes.
It was garrisoned until 1850 and used again during WW1 for training soldiers for several battalions who were of the Jewish faith, known also as the Jewish Legion, for action in Europe and Palestine.
It's position had a commanding view of the East end of the Bay of Fundy.
There are many placards telling its history and the site is free to visit.
