Spain Day 08d - Cathedral of Sevilla Part 1

The Cathedral of Sevilla has the largest footprint of any gothic cathedral in the world and was the largest cathedral for a time. Originally the site of a grand mosque in 1198 but turned into a church when taken over during the Reconquista in 1248. Work began on the present cathedral in 1402, or 1433 depending on the source, and finished in 1594 except for minor decorative work. It was built in stages, destroying the mosque in stages. All that remains of the mosque is the tower for the call to prayer and the courtyard, and entrance to it, used for washing the face, hands, and feet before going to prayer.

The main cathedral entrance.

This is the original weathervane that was on the converted prayer tower. A newer and lighter one is in its place now.

The organ.

The main altarpiece covered in gold taken from the cultures in the Americas and has many wooden depictions of scenes from the bible.

Choir.

The silver altar, also made from material taken from the Americas.

Christopher Columbus's coffin/tomb.

Underneath the coffin/tomb.
