Spain Day 15e - Guell Palace - Main level and Downstairs Stables

Built between 1886 and 88 the Palau Guell, or Guell Palace, commissioned Gaudi to build an austere building connected to the existing Guell mansion on the Rambla. It was mainly a showplace for entertaining and receiving visitors of the Guell family. Eusebi Guell only lived there for 20 years and moved to Park Guell after the Setmana Tragica (Tragic Week). The property was given to the state in 1945.

Main entrance.

Inside the lobby looking out. The gates were large enough for horse drawn carriages to not only be let in but also head to the basement stables.

The inner courtyard for light and ventilation.

The stables.

Another way for people to come up or down.

Back on the main level, this gallery was a way for the Guells and others to see who came in and what they were wearing.

The floors are wonderful.

The tall ceilings also give a level of dignity and austerity.

The austerity is removed once the main staircase is seen. Now up to the 1st floor.
