Spain Day 12b - Alhambra Part 2 - Alcazaba

The Fortress is the oldest part of the Alhambra, also known as the Alcazaba. A Roman fort has been found underneath the current structure and the Islamic fort is mentioned in texts dating back to the 9th century, but the current structure dates from the 13th. It commands the valley where Granada sits as well as defending the water source from the mountains.

Across the way was were we were two nights ago in the Albaisin.

A look back at the towers by which we entered into the fort.

In the courtyard of the fort are rooms without a roof that a cat is enjoying.

The Torre de la Vela, or watchtower, which the founder of the Nasrid dynasty used as his residence.

From the watchtower, a look back to the rest of the fort and Alhambra beyond. Can definitely tell this is a well defended position.

One of the original Moorish walls across on the other hill.

A fountain as we leave the fortress.
