Spain Day 16a - Hospital de Sant Pau - Part 1

The origin of the Hospital de Sant Pau goes back to 1896 when a wealthy banker left a sum of funds in his will for the construction of a new hospital. This hospital was to have the best of the new innovations of medicine and would be made in the Exiample district. Dominich de Montaner was the architect chosen and he traveled Europe looking at the many new hospitals in use. 16 of those buildings would be constructed in the Catalan art nouveau style, aka Moderniste. A newer hospital was made nearby in 2003, where services were moved to, and this complex renovated in 2009. It is now a historical complex because of its architecture, art, and history. Many charitable and non-governmental organizations have offices in the buildings.
