Spain Day 13h - Middle of a Block, the Exiample

When the city walls around Barcelona were torn down an expansion of the city occurred in an area known as the Exiample. It is known for its long straight streets, grid pattern, and for its people friendly blocks of flats. It was started in the late 1800's and ended in the early 1900's. See this post for a better overhead picture of the area.

Not only are they were made hollow inside but had greenery and common areas for the people who lived there. Over time some had more housing or commercial spaces inside. This one, freely enterable, had a playground and common areas. The old gent to the right engaged us in conversation that was pleasant, in particular for the setting.

Makes me wonder why more residential buildings are not required to be made this way now.
