The Saint John of the Monarchs monastery was founded as a Franciscan monastery by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella after the birth of their son and victory in the battle of Toro in 1476. It was to be the resting place of the Spanish monarchs but this was changed to Granada after their victory there. It was completed in 1504 and used until Napoleon's forces damaged it during their occupation and abandoned in 1835. Restoration was not started until almost 50 years later and were not completed until 1967. Franciscans reoccupied it in 1954 and continue to do so.
