Spain Day 16d - MNAC - Romanesque

The first section we saw at MNAC was also the first chronologically, the Romanesque exhibit. It is robust and extensive. It also took a good amount of time as there was so much to see that we had not seen before.

The scope of murals rescued from crumbing churches dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, in Catalonia and the Pyrenees, is astounding. Creating purpose built displays is a bonus. It is a multiple step process to remove the murals from their original walls.

There are also alter pieces and wooden plaques displaying religious stories and figures.

Here is the bottom right corner zoomed in. The raised background detail is extraordinary in depicting this traveling snake salesman.

The pillar sculpture that has been saved and restored from this time period is also interesting.

The interior of the Sant Miguel nunnery in Sigena, including arch decoration, is impressive.

Here is one of the archways zoomed in.

Many artifacts from this time are also on display.

It was amazing to see this amount of art from this time period.
